Yes, you can still be allowed to apply for MIA membership after
completed the 3 years of employment subjected to terms and conditions of
MIA membership requirements. It is advisable for you to find a mentor in
this CARE programme in order to ensure that you have achieved the
required level of competencies. If you still have a difficulty, please
inform MIA immediately.
Your mentor should be someone with whom you can work closely and meet
regularly, and also have strong commitment in guiding you throughout the
CARE programme. There is no issue on non-cooperative, if your mentor
agrees to act on this arrangement. Otherwise, you may have to find
another mentor and please ensure that the previous mentor has signed-off
all records regarding your experience.
A registered graduate who has acquired part of his/her experience under
the old system should achieve the requirements of CARE Programme on a
pro-rate basis. For example, if a registered graduate who requires 3
years of work experience for membership admission has acquired 2 years
of experience under the old system, he/she should achieve another 1 year
i.e. 200 working days of experience in the remaining 1 year under the
CARE programme.
In this case you should count the number of days gained for each area by
using pro-rate calculating basis. A working day is defined as a minimum
of 8 working hours a day. Therefore, for example, if you are doing two
areas simultaneously, you have to calculate number of hours a day for
each area, dividing by 8 hours, and then multiple it by number of days
gained i.e. 5 hours (taxation)/8 hours x 150 days = 94 working days and
3 hours (auditing)/8 hours x 150 days = 56 working days.
The frequency and length of meeting with your mentor will vary. You
should agree how and when your mentor will review your performance in
the first meeting with him/her. We recommend that the mentor and mentee
should meet regularly to review the progress and to rectify any problem
that may occur throughout the CARE programme.
We recommend that you keep your information up-to-date to ensure that
the appropriate competencies have been achieved are still fresh in mind.
It is also advisable that the mentor should sign off the CARE record
every three to six months. Always remember to update your CARE portal if
you are changing employment or mentor, and ensure your mentor has
reviewed and signed-off your CARE portal accordingly.
It is not necessary if the verification of mentee’s employment is up to
date and has been submitted to MIA. However, mentee is allowed to
request testimonial from their mentor who is also their direct manager.
A mentor will be entitled for 4 CPE credit hours per year, regardless of
the number of graduates that he/she mentors. However, should he/she mentor for
less than a year, the CPE credit hours will be prorated accordingly.
The verification should be done by one mentor only because mentor should
have knowledge and understanding of the mentee’s works. If mentor is not
competent in one of the areas, mentee should find an experienced person
e.g. immediate superior/head of department to countersign the respective
competency area.
